An Asian man has been sentenced by the Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court to 10 years in prison for trying to murder his workmate with a cleaver following a dispute.

The court also ordered the accused to be deported after serving his jail term.

The court records show that the case unfolded when the two had a heated argument, following which the defendant attacked the victim while he was asleep with a cleaver.

The victim sustained a permanent disability in his head and shoulder, as well as excessive bleeding. He was rushed to the hospital.

The RAK Police were alerted about the crime, and the suspect was arrested.

As per the RAK Public Prosecution, the defendant was accused of premeditated attempted murder. He was also charged with using abusive language against the victim.

The suspect denied the charges, and told the prosecutors that he did not intend or plan to kill the victim.

“I only meant to beat and scare him.”

The defence lawyer requested the court to clear his client of the charges for lack of evidence.

“My client denied the charges before the police, prosecution, and court. He has affirmed that he was only trying to intimidate him because of their dispute.”

The lawyer urged the court to have mercy on the defendant, and change the charges from attempted murder to that of a misdemeanour or assault with a cleaver.

The court first ordered adjournment of the case to September 30, and then ordered him to serve 10 years in jail, and deportation thereafter.
