WAM: UAE Central Bank cautions consumers on fraudulent activities

the Central Bank of the UAE

ABU DHABI, 30th March, 2020 (WAM) — The Central Bank of the UAE, CBUAE, issued a statement on Monday warning individuals of fraudulent activity.

In the statement, the Central Bank said, “Fraudsters always look for opportunities to target consumers, and as the public is engaged with coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic news; fraudsters are using different tactics to increase fraudulent activities on banking customers.”

CBUAE cautioned consumers saying that it would never ask consumers about private information – such as personal and bank account information. Any suspected fraudulent phone call should be reported to the respective authorities, the Central Bank advised, adding that it is closely working with concerned authorities to halt such fraudulent activities.

WAM: UAE Press: Private sector must come to the aid of people

UAE Press

ABU DHABI, 30th March, 2020 (WAM) — In its editorial today, Gulf News said that Dubai free zones’ decision to postpone the rents for six months is a “significant help” to businesses as the coronavirus outbreak continues to cripple the economic activities worldwide.

“It is part of the UAE’s efforts to contain the impact of the pandemic on every level,” the paper noted, saying that since the early days of the outbreak, the UAE has been at the forefront in mitigating the risks. These free zone incentives will apply for the period from 1st April.

Dr. Mohammed Al Zarouni, Vice-Chairman and CEO of Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority and Director-General of Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority, Dafza, was quoted as saying, “Through its initiatives, Dubai is proving its ability to mitigate the negative effects of the crisis and speed up the revival of its economy, with future positive returns for the emirate and the region, in addition to the preventive measures it has taken to limit the spread of COVID-19.”

The move also comes in the wake of several initiatives by the federal and local governments to set stimulus packages to help the economy overcome the pandemic fallouts, Dubai-based English language newspaper added.

In addition, few major private sector landlords have done their part in offering some relief to their business tenants, especially the small and medium businesses, which naturally face the brunt of the economic slowdown.

“But other private sector landlords have yet to step forward and do their part, especially the major developers who enjoy the largest share of the real estate market, for business and residential clients,” the paper wrote.

“The crisis will surely end. But for the time being, it is affecting all the aspects of life. Businesses around the world are shutting down and millions of people are losing their jobs. In the UAE, we might be in better shape than many others. However, there is no doubt that our private sector is reeling under the economic downturn and people will lose jobs or at least some of their pay.

“This is the time developers came to the aid of SMEs and families. By offering urgent relief, in rent deferrals, these developers will be actually helping our economy withstand this global crisis. There is an urgent need to help the SMEs as they are the core of any economic system. By keeping them in business, the economic recovery will be faster and stronger. That will also mean jobs are secured.

“Containing the pandemic’s economic impact is not just a government burden. It is a collective action. The private sector must play a role in it,” the paper concluded.

WAM: Constructive Trading newest member of MBRIF Guarantee Scheme programme

DUBAI, 29th March, 2020 (WAM) — The Mohammed bin Rashid Innovation Fund, MBRIF, has announced Constructive Trading as the newest member of its Guarantee Scheme programme.

As a member of the Guarantee Scheme, Constructive Trading joins other innovative companies and SMEs who receive assistance from the MBRIF – an initiative launched by the Ministry of Finance to promote and foster innovation in the UAE – in accessing affordable debt funding to accelerate the growth of their business.

The company developed a software, under the name ‘SteelpacRebar’, which provides supply chain solutions that increases the efficiency of the reinforcenment steel (rebar) supply chain and minimises material supply and deployment costs.

According to Cronstructive Trading, the technology improves workshop drawings’ productivity by 30 percent, enhancing the traceability for rebar shipments off and on-site.

It also prevents misuse of an average of three to five percent of total rebar on-site, and optimises the efficiency of the rebar supply chain, resulting in significant cost savings and minimising waste of steel, the company noted. Wastage savings of an estimated AED2 millions can be achieved, Constructive Trading notes, adding that thousands of hours of abortive time across a project duration can also be avoided.

Commenting on the announcement, Fatima Alnaqbi, Chief Innovation Officer MBRIF and Representative of the Ministry of Finance, said, “The MBRIF launched the Guarantee Scheme to provide government guarantees and help members in small funding in the beginning, to then enable the owners of these innovative projects to benefit from Emirates Development Bank, and apply to the accelerator programme, which allows additional funding.”

Alnaqbi added, “Constructive Trading has created a ground-breaking innovative solution to reduce waste and increase efficiency for its clients in the construction industry, to be a prime example of the type of businesses we look for to include in the Guarantee Scheme. We look forward to working with many more innovative businesses and SMEs in the future.”

For his part, Andrew James Woolnough, Founder of Constructive Trading, said, “The UAE provides a great environment for companies like us to grow and operate in, particularly with initiatives such as the MBRIF, which enables business growth and provides financing options that will help us scale up operations.

“Being accepted into the MBRIF Guarantee Scheme will play an essential part in our team being able to further develop our software, with the potential to extend our reach further than ever before,” he added.

In addition to Construction Trading, members of the MBRIF Guarantee Scheme programme include Oliv, a technology-enabled innovative job portal; Pure Harvest, a technology-enabled agribusiness, and Lamsa, an award-winning Arabic edutainment mobile app that offers free access for children.

The MBRIF Guarantee Scheme works with innovative companies and banks to create easier access to funding for innovators and entrepreneurs whose businesses contribute to the UAE’s economic development and diversification.

Eligible Guarantee Scheme applicants are UAE-based individuals or companies, or those willing to be based in the UAE in the near future, particularly those with a strong contribution towards innovation, commercialisation and industry parameters.

WAM: Dubai Municipality reassures public on safety of products used in sterilisation operations

Dubai Municipality

DUBAI, 29th March 2020 (WAM) – As Dubai Municipality continues its operations to sterilise public areas and buildings in the emirate as part of the ongoing national sterilisation programme, it has reassured the public that products being used in the disinfection procedures do not pose any risks and meet the highest standards for safety and effectiveness.

The civic body confirmed that the sterilisation products used in the campaign do not contain active substances except for hydrogen peroxide, which is used in safe ways by specialised personnel after proportionately diluting the chemical according to mandatory safety requirements. The Municipality clarified that all disinfection and sterilisation products contain chemical ingredients but varies in the concentration of active substances.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General, Dubai Municipality, said the city-wide sterilisation follows globally benchmarked safety guidelines in the method of use, dilution, and mixing ratios. Disinfection procedures are carried out by a special team of experts with a strong focus on public safety.

He added that all sanitation products used in the campaign contain active ingredients approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Antimicrobial Chemicals Center (CBC) and recommended for sterilisation by the World Health Organization. They are also evaluated by Dubai Municipality to verify their effectiveness and registered in the ‘Montaji’ smart app approved by the World Health Organization, Al Hajri said.

Al Hajri stressed on the need for the public to stay at home during the disinfection operations and urged them not gather at sites where the operation is being conducted in order to ensure a smooth operation and avoid delays.

The Dubai Municipality campaign, which began last Thursday, has so far completed sterilization operations in 226 areas and public facilities in the emirate with the support of 186 specialised personnel. Implemented in cooperation with its strategic partners, the campaign is being conducted within the framework of preventive efforts aimed at ensuring the health and safety of all members of society. The programme forms part of efforts undertaken by institutions and bodies in the country to ensure the highest levels of protection and prevention in the community.

The sterilisation operations feature advanced devices and technologies in accordance with international best practices. Dubai Municipality is also using drones in conducting the procedures, which enhance the speed and efficiency of the sterilisation operations.

Specialised teams have deployed advanced vehicles and equipment for spraying and disinfection, including spraying devices on vehicles that compress disinfection fluid into small particles, portable sprays that operate with hydraulic retail power, and spray and fumigation machines. All sanitation products used were approved by the Municipality. They were evaluated to verify their effectiveness and registered in the ‘Montaji’ smart app approved by the World Health Organization.

WAM: UAE strongly condemns Houthi ballistic missile attack on Saudi Arabia

ABU DHABI, 29th March, 2020 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates has condemned the Houthi militias’ attempt to target civilian areas in the cities of Riyadh and Jazan in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with two ballistic missiles, which Saudi air defenses intercepted. The attack resulted in the injury of numerous individuals.

In a statement released on Sunday, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reiterated its solidarity with the Kingdom over these terrorist attacks, affirming its support for all measures taken by Saudi authorities to safeguard the country’s security and stability and uphold the safety of its citizens and residents.

The statement underscored that the security of the UAE and that of Saudi Arabia are indivisible, and the UAE considers any threat facing the Kingdom to be a threat to its own security and stability.

The statement noted that the continuation of these attacks illustrates the danger confronting the region from the Houthi coup in Yemen, which seeks to undermine regional security and stability.

It concluded by emphasizing that this attack not only targeted the Kingdom, but also threatens international unity and solidarity in light of challenges presented by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

WAM: Foreign Ministry supports UAE artists by purchasing their fine artwork

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed

ABU DHABI, 29th March, 2020 (WAM) — Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s Office of Public and Cultural Diplomacy has in the past two weeks acquired pieces worth more than AED1.5 million created by emerging and established Emirati artists.

The next phase of the project will involve the Ministry procuring artwork by long-time residents. “We want to lend our support to everyone who is part of the country’s rich artistic ecosystem,” Minister of State Zaki Nusseibeh said.

Nusseibeh pointed out that, with so many galleries and museums closed, now is a good time for those who can support the arts to do so.

“With the cancellation of the many art events that were scheduled to take place this season, we wanted to send a message of solidarity to our artists,” Nusseibeh said, adding that the artwork will also play an important part in the UAE’s cultural diplomacy abroad.

While the works of art will find a home at UAE embassies and missions across the world, they will first be put on display at Alserkal Avenue within the next month in an online exhibition.

“In its initial phase, the Ministry has procured artwork for 10 embassies,” Nusseibeh said. “But we will continue until the majority of UAE embassies exhibit Emirati artwork.”

The initiative, which has been given the informal title Artists in Embassies, was launched under the directive of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed.

“With the recent pandemic, we wanted to realise and announce this project,” Nusseibeh, who is overseeing the initiative, explained. “It is a message that demonstrates our deep appreciation and support for the local arts and acknowledges that they are a critical part of the national identity.”

The initiative is a help to many local artists and galleries during a time of uncertainty, though the idea of populating UAE embassies with local artwork has been in the works since 2018.

“We set up a committee with historians, curators and art experts to get a varied take on which artwork to procure,” Nusseibeh says, adding that the committee sought to amass a set of works that best represented the diverse artistic traditions of the Emirates.

“We also consulted with diplomats to get a better understanding of every country’s artistic landscape and their respective sensibilities to know which embassy was best for each artwork.”
